Boardriders also holds a number of nights where by recruitment agencies organise talks at the hostel giving advise and tips about working in Manly.

Manly is a busy tourist destination therefore there is always alot or work in the Hospitality Industry. Boardriders have many contacts with local pubs, night clubs, cafés, and restaurants who love to hire staff staying at Boardriders.

If working with alcohol it’s a legal requirement to hold a RSA certificate (Responsible Service of Alcohol). Its costs approximely $75 and only takes about 6 hours to complete . It can be completed in many of Manly’s pubs or with Travel Express.

There are also many retail shops who love to hire backpackers expressly in the busy summer months. Some of the large retail shops include many of the well know surf brands such as Billabong, Rip curl, Roxy and Mambo.

There is also a lot of work in the construction and building industry. We have many local business who ring Boardriders on a daily basis looking for workers for a couple of days to a couple of months.

Jobs include anything from cleaning windows, cleaning houses, labouring work, land scaping, and painting just to name a few. If working on a building site you need to hold a Green card. Mobile Phones

Its important when you in Australia that you can be contacted by either family, friends or employers. Pre paid mobile phones are cheap and a great way to get a mobile phone to use in Australia. There are many other backpackers selling their old phones or many of the mobile phone company's sell cheap phones with starter kits to get you started . Some of the most common mobile phone company’s are Vodaphone, Teletra, Optus, Virgin, 3, and orange.

Medical cover

In Australia we are lucky to have free health cover. If you are from The Uk, Ireland, The netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Italy, Malta, Norway or New Zealand then you can apply for a Medicare card. A Medicare care allows free access to emergency treatment from public hospitals and medical treatment from doctors. Its free to get a Medicare caned and you can apply on line at www.mediciareaustralia.gov.au

Bank Accounts

Its also important to open a bank account when you first arrive in Australia. Most employers will pay your wages into you bank accoount. All you need in proof of address eg. rent receipt, and few dollars and photo ideifcation such as your passport or driving licence.The main banks are Commonweath Bank, Westpac, National Australia Bank and St George. You will receive an ATM card which gives you access to ATMS and EFTPOS machines. It only take a few days but can take up to 1-2 weeks.
